Write a Poem for a Month

image divided into 12 tiles featuring a colourful image to represent each month of the year

Consider a month of the year—September, March, April, whichever month most speaks to you—it doesn’t have to be your favourite, it could be the month of your birthday or the current month.

After you’ve made your selection, write a poem for this month of the year. Start your poem with “[Month] is…” Is September the smell of fresh pencils and a new backpack? Maybe March is crocuses peaking through the snow? April is the soft crack and shift of grey slush in the street? Continue your reflection, starting every new line or sentence with a “[Month] is…” observation, or finding your own structure for the poem. Allow yourself to get a bit weird—maybe May is a kitten stretching to expose its soft belly?

After you finish your poem, see if you want to keep going—you could even write a poem for each month of the year, organizing them as a suite or mini-collection.
